Although Miami University banned smoking on campus in August 2008, the policy still seems to have mixed results in preventing students, faculty and staff from lighting up between classes. “It is absolutely underreported,” said Susan Vaughn, director of ethics and student conflict resolution. Vaughn said the responsibility of enforcing the policy is put in the hands of Miami students and faculty. The first offense on campus is a warning. If a student smokes repeatedly on campus and is reported, they will be charged with a Code Two violation. Vaughn said her office has seen about 20 ... Jump to full article >>

Secondhand smoke a danger to smokers
People who have a health risk from smoking have an additional risk from breathing environmental tobacco smoke — secondhand smoke — researchers in Italy found. Maria Teresa Piccardo, Anna Stella and Federico Valerio of the National Cancer Research Institute in Genoa, Italy, studied the exposure of newsagents in the city to harmful cigarette smoke. “Newsagents were chosen because they work alone in small newsstands, meaning that any tobacco smoke in the air they breathe is strictly correlated to the number of cigarettes smoked by that newsagent,” Piccardo said in a statem ... Following Gov. Bay Staters Are Smoking Less but Eating More & it’s Showing
Bay Staters are like most Americans in that they have been smoking less over the last 15 years, which has resulted in longer life expectancy and improved quality of life. But a study recently published in the “New England Journal of Medicine” warns that those benefits could be wiped out by the growing obesity rate. Smoking rates are down 20 percent but obesity rates are up 48 percent – offsetting health gains made by reducing tobacco use. Chuck Reed with the American Cancer Society says few people are aware of the link between being overweight and getting cancer. “In th ... Jump to full article >>
Scottish tobacco display ban laws approved by MSPs
New laws to end the open display of tobacco in shops in Scotland have been passed by MSPs. The Tobacco and Primary Medical Services Bill will also ban cigarette vending machines and introduce a registration scheme for retailers. Ministers said the legislation would make cigarettes less attractive to children and young people. But shopkeepers and manufacturers said the measures were unjustified and would be costly to bring in. Large retailers have until 2011 to implement the ban, while smaller shops have been given a 2013 deadline. Conservative MSP Mary Scanlon, whose party opposed the bill, fa ... Jump to full article >>
