The Legislature is considering very important legislation that affects the health of all Alabamians, SB372, a bill that will make all Alabama workplaces smoke-free.
My husband was an Air Force pilot who flew the KC-135 throughout his career. He would come home from flights with the stench of tobacco covering him until the U.S. Air Force said enough and made aircraft, and eventually the Air Force, smoke-free. People cannot control the atmosphere of their workplace any more than my husband could control the air in his cockpit. It takes strong leadership to protect non-smokers.
Let’s understand what is at stake here: tobacco and secondhand smoke are the greatest preventable cause of illness and death. Business owners have rights, and the Legislature has made it clear they have a handshake with them.
By refusing to support SB372 without amendments or exemptions, our legislators are really showing they have a handshake with Big Tobacco. That is who really wins if this legislation doesn’t pass.
Ask your legislators to move these bills and shake hands with the people of Alabama.

Absolute nonsense, there is zero danger from second hand smoke.
I wish I could say there was also zero danger from second hand stupidity, but unfortunately stupidity is rampant in America.
People have the right to smoke, the United States was supported by tobacco revenues during its infancy. This bill needs to be removed from the floor.
